耐火電纜是在火焰燃燒情況下能保持一定時間的正常運行,可保持線路的完整性。耐火電纜燃燒時產生的酸氣煙霧量少,耐火阻燃性能大大提高,特別是在燃燒時,伴隨著水噴和機械打擊的情況下,電纜仍可保持線路的完整運行。

有些電氣設計人員對阻燃電纜及耐火電纜的概念分辨不清,對二者的結構及特性不甚了解,從而導致無法根據供電要求正確設計選用這兩種電纜,在現場進行設計代理或監理工作時不能正確指導這兩種電纜的敷設施工。
